I carved these nesting russian dolls as a gift for my extended family members. The reason why I left them blank without any definite objectives were because of 2 reasons. 1) my family there is of mixed culture, (one being russian and the other not) and I did not want to impose any culture on them. 2) So that the children were able to paint them themselves in the image of themselves, for instance they may not necessarily be snow white, I wouldn't want to impose that societal expectation on them therefore I let them decide what is beautiful.
